At school

Happiness is where we find it, but rarely where we seek it. J. Petit Senn A day later with my menu than usual, I have been working on my pantry and made the last few days “eat out of pantry” days instead of my scheduled meals.  It has been both fun and a source of peace of mind to have the menus and follow them.  DD is in the kitchen every time a new meal is cooked  and even looks forward to leftovers!  I am going to plan slow cooker meals or larger meals again to restock the freezer. Wednesday: Robin Miller’s Sesame-Ginger Pork with Soba Noodles Thursday: Quinoa and Carrot Salad and Tempeh Bolognes Friday: Hungarian Beef Goulash Saturday: The Nourished Kitchen’s Slow Cooker Lamb Roast (this recipe is from her weekly menu plan). Sunday: leftvoers Yesterday was Mardi Gras, tradition dictates a sinful menu.  We baked Martha Stewart’s …Read more

For the soul

It’s important to be heroic, ambitious, productive, efficient, creative, and progressive, but these qualities don’t necessarily nurture the soul. The soul has different concerns, of equal value: downtime for reflection, conversation, and reverie; beauty that is captivating and pleasuring; relatedness to the environs and to people; and any animal’s rhythm of rest and activity. Home management

“Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.” — Pascal DD and I have a fun day planned filled with crafts, cooking, and snuggling up on the couch with a good book!  We are planning our week with fun activities with our friends as well, enjoying this 43F weather which feels wonderful next to single digits we have had.  No snow in the forecast either until next week… the first normal schedule week this winter! We went through our cookbooks yesterday and planned our week: Monday: Tuna tapenade for lunch, on heart shaped toast. Dinner: Ina Garten’s Bangers and Mustard Mash, a side of maple roasted root vegetables.  A delicious berry mousse for dessert! Tuesday: Leftovers and quinoa salad Wednesday: Salmon with fresh herbs, a rice dish using what ever …Read more

Home management

This week started well: my menu was set, grocery shopping done, and school planned out.  It feels really nice to face Monday that way.  Then DS came home to see the doctor for the stomach flu spreading rapidly through the college.  He was sicker than I have seen him in quite a while.  It is very comforting to see how well he takes care of himself (though he admits wanting to be home and get the right foods and some nurturing).  This is a very brutal virus, I hear it is everywhere so take care everyone.  What are your favorite home remedies for the stomach flu?  The BRAT diet of course.  I love Miso soup, ginger tea with a little honey or agave nectar.  I also read that chamomile is a stomach soothing herb.  Send in your favorite home remedies. I am working on the various projects started: I ordered …Read more
