In the kitchen

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” Soren Kierkegaard The week is over, DS was home for spring break which he unfortunately spent healing from a flu-like virus.  He got all the rest he needed, he is now ready to head back to college.  The weekend is therefore dedicated baking!  Yesterday I spent the day cooking and I need to thank all the wonderful food bloggers out there for their talent and willingness to share.  I am a recipe cook, I do not create really in the kitchen so I am always looking for something fun and new to try. For breakfast we tested Silvana’s Kitchen’s Gluten-Free Sticky Cinnamon Swirl Pancakes with Maple Icing (minus the icing, they were plenty sweet for us without).  Absolutely delicious and sinful!  I took a small shortcut with Kind Arthur Flour gluten-free pancake mix which we were planning to …Read more

In the kitchen

This morning, DS returned to college.  We had him home for 3 days, and we had a very nice time.  The bonus is that my laundry room only has towels and pillows left to wash!  He comes home for laundry and the deal is that I will do all the wash if he rounds up the hampers and sorts.  All I have to do is be home enough to go through 5-6 loads in the weekend.  I love having it all done and put away in just a couple of days.  One less thing to think about. The experiment of the weekend was the Triple Chocolate Mess!  We had made the lava type chocolate cake in the slow cooker once years ago and DS loved it.  We had to improve a bit, I did not have a chocolate cake mix on hand and used a gluten-free brownie mix instead.  The …Read more

Home management

This week started well: my menu was set, grocery shopping done, and school planned out.  It feels really nice to face Monday that way.  Then DS came home to see the doctor for the stomach flu spreading rapidly through the college.  He was sicker than I have seen him in quite a while.  It is very comforting to see how well he takes care of himself (though he admits wanting to be home and get the right foods and some nurturing).  This is a very brutal virus, I hear it is everywhere so take care everyone.  What are your favorite home remedies for the stomach flu?  The BRAT diet of course.  I love Miso soup, ginger tea with a little honey or agave nectar.  I also read that chamomile is a stomach soothing herb.  Send in your favorite home remedies. I am working on the various projects started: I ordered …Read more

Winter is here… time for stews…

In the kitchen

“What fire could ever equal the sunshine of a winter’s day?” — Henry David Thoreau We will not see much sunshine today… 8 to 13 inches of snow might be coming our way along with snow blowing and shoveling with DD.  It is time to pull out the slow cooker!  I have a long love story with my slow cookers.  I have several sizes, use them often in the winter, and one Christmas Eve, I had 3 cooking our meal while we attended the Christmas Mass.  Last week I pulled my slow cooker cookbooks off the shelve and picked the ones to test…  My favorites (which do not need testing):  Lorna Sass’ has some intricate recipes, some with many gourmet ingredients but they are all worth the work and search.  Next to it is Rick Rodgers with delicious, full proof recipes.  Both gave good results with each recipe on the …Read more
