What does learning mean: accumulating knowledge or transforming your life? Paulo Coelho Our son came home for the long weekend after his first week ever away from home. The adjustments he is making do not appear to be more difficult than those of his fellow students. Everyone seems to be adjusting in different ways, different changes. He is as always friends with everyone, enjoying the company of other freshmen as well as that of upperclassmen. I imagine it is not a comfortable situation, and some aspects must be very hard for him but nonetheless, he is thriving and growing. I could not be prouder of him. I was not prepared however for the shock of his homecoming. The week had been long, with a heat index above 100 and my daughter sick. I felt the loss, the void he left in our days but it seemed easier than I had …Read more

Three of four in our family have allergies to gluten. It has not always been easy. We started our gluten-free journey in 1998, when our son’s allergies were diagnosed and the removal of wheat cleared persistent symptoms in a matter of weeks. At the time the choices of gluten-free products were slim and not all that tasty either.  We went through a period of baking everything from scratch with several different flours and now with the new mixes and flours available to us we can bake just about anything and know we will love it! At school

Whenever we release our need to be right about everything as parents, we are able to meet our children in a relationship of mutuality and respect. Arjuna Ardagh Today’s the day and he is off on his new adventure. It all felt so right, there was no room for tears though I imagined they will come as we try to find a new routine and start organizing the new school year. He was smiling and nervous when we said goodbye but I felt he had found his space. He is going to enjoy the very limited responsibilities and concentrate on his studies and more importantly his life, himself, discovering and exploring. He called and sounded great. It is a small group of kids all sharing a common interest and he seems anxious to start classes on Monday. I hope they will be challenging enough or that in the other case …Read more

Journeys and Destinations…

The journey between what you once were and who you are now becoming is where the dance of life really takes place. Barbara Deangelis In 10 days, my oldest is going to College! My “baby” is all grown up, ready to face the world, very lucid and aware this world is not always kind. It is a time to look back and reflect… The paradox we noticed is that at the time he sets off to college a lot of projects, problems, changes, come to an end and we ask why now and not sooner? So many of these kept us from doing things we planned on, classes to create and take, excursions and even trips. I am beginning to understand the old adage “it is about the journey, not the destination”. I use to be more goal oriented and nothing mattered too much until the goal was achieved. I …Read more
