Home management

“A house without books is like a room without windows.”  Henry Ward Beecher I have had a lifelong love of books which has been picked up by both kids, there is nothing like snuggling up under a blanket with a good book on a cold winter night or in the summer shade.  A book opens your mind to another world, to new information, to yourself… I could not find a book I needed for my school so organizing books was definitely the next best task on my list.  When we moved back in after the remodel, we were so exhausted, worn out both physically and emotionally, that I unpacked the house as quickly as I could, trying to set things up as best as I could but speed was the main concern to resume a normal life as quickly as possible.  We love the new “library” wall but without an …Read more

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. John Keats (1795 – 1821) The pantry is done!  DD and I tackled the toughest job over the weekend and were so proud to use it to bake Banana Bread Sunday afternoon.  What a pleasure to cook and bake when everything is in its place, easy to reach!  I feel like I am finally home.  The cabinet pull-out organizers were unfortunately not going to work, the kitchen space is an odd shape and size so cabinets are not standard. I used open bins to act as pull-outs for better access.  The Container Store had the right combination of sizes.  I like the handled bins though they cannot handle heavier items such as canned goods.  We will take a long detour to the Natik Mall to be able to inspect some of their other open bins.  I will take advantage of that field …Read more

For the soul

But it is vital to remember that information – in the sense of raw data – is not knowledge; that knowledge is not wisdom; and that wisdom is not foresight. But information is the first essential step to all of these. Arthur Clarke I have been ruminating this one for weeks, months…  What happens to all the hours in the day?  Why can it take so much longer to complete some projects?  I have tacking how my days are spent, and I was surprised at how much time is spent sifting through information.  There are emails, newspapers, phone interruptions, books, research results on specific projects, etc. I have an analytical mind, maybe a slight tendency to perfectionism, and especially a curious mind which generates a lot of questions, ideas.  This leads to an accumulation of articles, links, books, etc.  The amount of available information seems to have multiplied beyond our …Read more
